GDPR Compliance now made mandatory by EU

General Data Protection Regulation came into effect May 25, 2018. ‘GDPR’ are a new set of regulations set by the European Union (EU) to safeguard sensitive data from cyber-security breaches. Under the terms of GDPR, strict conditions govern how organizations gather data and how it is managed. Organizations that fail to comply will face penalties.

How does the new regulation affect India?

GDPR is applicable to any entity that controls or processes the personal data of a natural person residing in the EU. Several businesses operating in India target customers globally. Under it, if an entity, while offering its goods or services, targets persons in the EU and consequently collects and processes personal data of such persons, then the entity in question is required to comply with the rules and processes set out in GDPR.

The new regulation is going to cost the businesses monetarily. New appointments have to be made to monitor how data is being used. The person in-charge needs to comply with all the norms of the new regulations. Having a knowledgeable person is very important.

GDPR are surely for the benefit of the people feels Netsparker

“People are taking GDPR seriously because of how many high-profile data breaches we have all witnessed in the last few years,” said Ferruh Mavituna, CEO of Netsparker. “In the past, blame for data breaches was shifted around from party to party. Was it the business? The individual? The government? GDPR removes the ambiguity. As of May 25, businesses are responsible for data breaches. As a result, companies will have to restructure how they handle data, and, if they don’t have a sound IT infrastructure, they will have to rebuild from the ground up. It’s heartening to see that so many companies are taking themselves to task.”

The Facebook Data breach incident is still fresh. Personal Data has been misused lately through various sources. The European Union’s initiation has brought an end to the outdated 1995 Data Protection Directives. Such regulations are a must in today’s era.
