This blog includes a list of top search engines in the world.

How often do we rely on search engines (especially Google) in bouts of confusion? Almost every time. Search Engines are a part of our day-to-day life. Whether it is about finding information or locating a coffee shop in our vicinity, we rely on search engines for almost everything!

As per Statcounter, Google constitutes 92.24% of search engine market share worldwide. But, to your amazement, there are plenty of search engines other than Google!

There are many search engines present in the market which you might not be aware of. These search engines are significantly user-friendly and give quick results within seconds! Also, they offer advanced privacy policies to ensure there isn’t any geek stalking you on the internet!

While Google is a dominant search engine across the world, there are many other search engines dominant in different countries across the world. Here is a comprehensive search engine list.

1) Google

The advent of Google in 1998 has transformed the internet era. Today, Google has become an inevitable part of our lives. As per Statista, as of 2024, Google is the most popular search engine in the world with around 95% market share.

What makes Google stand apart from the crowd?

i] Google displays the most relevant content results with the help of its unique page rank algorithm.

ii] The ability to give personalized results due to its deep linking with the user’s mobile device and Gmail account.

iii] Ability to operate in local language. As of 2024, Google searches are available in 149 languages.

2) Microsoft Bing

Are you looking for an astounding alternative search engine? Microsoft Bing is a strong alternative with 2.29% of the market share worldwide.

Though its market share is far less than Google, Microsoft Bing has its unique features.

Microsoft Bing is advancing its advertisement space by adding several unique features. Bing’s image and video search provide a satisfactory user experience.

The company’s market share is respectable in major countries like the USA and UK. Its algorithm is less sophisticated than Google’s but has amplified the results’ quality by adapting  AI.  It’s Copilot feature helps user get answers to their questions using an AI bot.

Back in 2023, Bing’s parent company had made a $10 billion investment in ChatGPT. A lot of speculation was made about the possible integration of ChatGPT into Bing. However, it was not confirmed by either company.

Bing’s advertisement system is less advanced than Google’s. However, there is an ease of setting up ad campaigns with lower CPC on Bing.

Fun fact: People often say that BING is an acronym for ‘Bing Is Not Google’. However, it has never been confirmed by the company.

3) Yahoo! Search

Next up on our list is Yahoo! Search with 1.52% of market share worldwide. Yahoo is a popular name in the email service domain. Yahoo! Search dates back to 1995 when it was first introduced to the world. Today, it has become the 12th most visited site globally.

From 2011 to 2015, Yahoo! Bing endorsed Yahoo! search. However, in 2015 Google proposed to collaborate with Yahoo! Search for search-related services. Until 2018, Yahoo! Search was working with Google and Bing simultaneously. However, since 2019, Yahoo! Search works only with Bing.

Since 2015, Yahoo! Search has been the default search engine of the Firefox browsers in the USA. Yahoo! Search has an extensive presence in major emerging markets across the globe.

4) AOL

AOL is one of the oldest names in the history of search engines. Since its launch in 1985, the company has endured some of the best and the worst times. As of now, it holds around 0.06% of the search engine market share.

After 11 years of establishing itself as a web portal and online service provider, AOL had around 5 million active users in 1996. Soon the company started providing many services like web portals, email, instant messaging, and web browsing.

With a twist of circumstance, AOL lost its popularity in mid-2009. Today, the company functions under Verizon Communications. As per some sources, AOL has a network of 20,000 bloggers.  These bloggers are from different spheres of profession like politicians, celebrities, academic experts, etcetera.

5) Duckduckgo

In today’s internet era, data-stealing has gained momentum. As per one report by The Hindu, social media giants like Facebook and LinkedIn share almost 50% of their user’s data to third-party firms. The consequences of such data-stealing are heavy financial loss of the people.

Duckduckgo’s privacy policy neither collects nor stores user’s personal information. On this platform, you can be an independent user without fretting about your actions being stalked on the internet.

As per Duckduckgo’s traffic analysis, it answers 75 million-plus queries annually. However, they only have a market share of 0.58%  globally.

Duckduckgo doesn’t have a search index of its own. It depends upon other reliable sources (such as Yahoo, Bing, Yelp) to answer search-related queries. Despite this limitation, the search engine provides a smooth interface with moderate ads to its users.

6) Baidu

Baidu is a Chinese search engine with a 1.48% market share worldwide. The company stands at the 4th rank on Alexa Internet ranking.

Baidu serves as a search engine and features Baidu Maps, Baidu Tieba, and Baidu Wangpan. Although Baidu is available globally, it functions only in the Chinese language. Overall, Baidu presents little influence in the world because of its language restriction. However, Baidu’s organic algorithm is quite simpler than Google’s.

Baidu’s market share in China is almost 76.02% making it the second-largest search engine across the globe. As per few sources, this search engine handles almost 5 billion queries every day.

7) Yandex

Yandex is a Russian search engine having a 43.27% market share in Russia. However, globally it holds only 0.57% of the market share. The platform is also quite popular in countries like Turkey, Ukraine, and Belarus.

The company offers 70 Internet-related services including e-commerce, online advertising, and mobile applications. The competition for both paid and organic searches is low on this platform. However, it is slightly difficult for outsiders to rank on this platform.

8) Wiki.com

If you’re a fan of community-led information on Wikipedia, Wiki.com is the right fit for you!

Wiki.com is a Google custom search engine offering a variety of search results. It pulls relevant content from dozens of wikis on the internet and displays them on its results page.

On Wiki.com you can get search results from Independent Wikis, Wikipedia Only, Expert Encyclopedia, and All Wikis. Moreover, Wiki.com supports Google’s advanced search operators.

9) Startpage

Startpage, a Dutch search engine company, is popular for its lenient privacy policy. This search engine displays answers to the queries from Google. However, unlike Google, Startpage does not collect or store your personal information or search history.

With the  Anonymous View option, users can conduct searches while maintaining their anonymity on this platform. The URL generator of this search engine is quite useful in uprooting the need for collecting cookies.

Since the company does not store customer data, targeted marketing is not possible on Startpage. As of 2020, the company claims to provide its services in 82 different languages. The Startpage website provides tabs for web searches along with videos and images.

Since May 2020, Startpage has been added as an optional or default search engine on Vivaldi’s Browser.

10) Search Encrypt

Search Encrypt is making its place in the current market with its up-to-the-minute features.

With Search Encrypt, no trackers can track your browsing habits. Moreover, your search terms are end-to-end encrypted to keep hackers at bay.

The search engine also provides Privacy-Friendly Maps and Video Search. Unlike most search engines, Search Encrypt does not use your location to show results. You can type your destination and get a clear map of that place without keeping your privacy at stake. For video searches, it analyses dozens of sources on the internet and pulls out the most relevant for you.

Even if your device is accessed by other people, no one can check your search history on Search Encrypt.

11) One Search

Looking for an easy-to-use, privacy-oriented search engine? One Search is one of the best options present in the market.

With One Search you can explore seamlessly without worrying about being tracked! The system never stores customers’ data (like IP address, geographic location, etcetera). One Search users never receive unwanted re-targeted ads based on their previous searches.

What’s more? With One Search, user’s search terms are encrypted to maintain the sheer privacy of customers. Also, by turning on the ‘SafeSearch’ feature, users can ensure clean and righteous content on their feed. Also, One Search displays unbiased and unfiltered results.

Swiss cows officially use Microsoft Bing for web searches. It also has an in-build index exclusively for German language searches. The search engine offers shopping and music search along with a language translator.

Through this search engine, the company aims to promote moral values and digital media education.

13) YouTube

YouTube got its start in 2005, when co-founders Chad Hurley, Steve Chen, and Jawed Karim developed an online video-sharing website within the company they named after the Japanese word “Tiatoshi”, which means “to share.” YouTube was acquired in 2006 by Google for $1.65 billion.

It is the second-largest search engine on the Internet. If you can rank on YouTube, you can rank on Google. Unlike Google, on the other hand, YouTube is a search engine that you control. There are over 1 billion unique visitors to YouTube every month. With the right approach, this video platform can be a goldmine of traffic for your site.

In fact, YouTube receives over 100 million unique visitors every month who view more than 3.2 billion hours of videos. If you’ve ever tried to search for a product or service on YouTube, you know how powerful it can be.
